EA wanted to celebrate 16 years of FUT: Football Ultimate Teams, an online game mode in EAFC that allows gamers to build their own dream teams. Even Golden Balls joined the party...
Best-selling video game EAFC – formerly known as FIFA – had a big birthday coming up and wanted to celebrate FUT's sweet 16th with fans.
Online content like a live stream presented by Diogo Jota and this cheeky video of David Beckham enabled the community to tap into 16 years of Ultimate Team memories.
To bring the party spirit to everyone's screens, agency COPA90 asked us to drop in and help Mister Dills’ illustrations pop with some animation antics.
The 5 ‘starboys’ (recognise anyone?) are bursting with characterful animation, while in the player posters, flourishes like pops, sparks and flag-waves catch the eye and keep the dynamic party feel going.
We consciously kept to a 2D hand-drawn aesthetic that complemented Mister Dills’ bold illustrations.
The animations contain layers of loops within loops that could also be used as standalone assets to extend the reach of this campaign.
The final animations were made in After Effects, but in some cases we lovingly drew up the frames in PhotoShop first. It’s an intensive process, but one we believe is worth it to achieve a real sense of hand-drawn craft.
